Founded by the Greeks in 729 BC, Catania is an authentic melting pot of civilizations, with influences from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Aragonese, Spanish and other eras all evident on its land. The central “old town” of Catania feature exuberant late-baroque architecture, prompted after the 1693 earthquake, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are distinguished by their black volcanic rock exteriors.

The city of Catania boasts a striking exhibition of architectural history thanks to its magnificent and amazing palaces, beautifully furnished interiors of churches with the most elaborate exterior, and cohesive urban design.

Popular activities in Catania include a visit to the intriguing Catania Cathedral and the stunning Piazza del Duomo, which is home to the city's iconic Elephant Fountain. Strolling down Via Etnea, the main thoroughfare, tourists may take in views of Mount Etna and colorful Baroque structures. Another feature of the city's ancient heritage is the Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena, one of Europe's biggest Benedictine complexes. A wonderful glimpse into Catania's rich history may also be had at the Roman Theatre and the mediaeval fortification Castello Ursino.

It is located on Sicily's east coast, at the base of the active volcano, Mount Etna, and it faces the Ionian Sea. It is the capital of the 58-municipality region known as the Metropolitan City of Catania, which is the seventh-largest metropolitan city in Italy.

Catania University

Established in 1434, the University of Catania is the oldest in Sicily and one of the oldest in Italy. The king of Aragon, who at the time was king of Sicily too, authorised the foundation of a studium generale with the privilege of granting bachelor’s degrees and licences to students of core disciplines such as theology, canon law, civil law, medicine, philosophy and liberal arts (literature). However, it was not until the recognition from Pope Eugene IV, ten years later, that the University was officially established in the city of Catania.

Today, the educational system is run and overseen by 17 departments. The Medical School for starters, and by two other educational units respectively located in the city of Ragusa and in Syracuse. On average the University has about 38.000 students, with 112 total courses divided into 51 three-year bachelor degree courses, 9 single-cycle master's degree courses (5 or 6 years) and 52 two-year master's degree courses

Conference Venue: Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena

The conference can be hosted at Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena, a late baroque monument and one of the biggest Benedictine monasteries in Europe. The Monastery is 10 minutes-walk from the Cathedral square and at walking distance from the hotels and the lovely city centre.

The construction of the building started in 1500 and has continued until today. It is an example of architectonic integration of different styles through different epochs: you can find a Roman house, the cloisters and a roof garden. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It hosts the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania.
